GCAA, AFCAC and CAAS Empower African Aviation Professionals with Crisis Management Skills

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), in partnership with the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), successfully organised an Aviation Crisis Management Training programme aimed at strengthening aviation security preparedness and crisis response capabilities across Africa.

The five-day programme, which commenced on Monday, 13 July 2026, brought together participants from several African countries, including Togo, South Sudan, Chad, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, Malawi, the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville), Zambia and Ghana.

Opening the programme on behalf of the Director-General of GCAA, the Acting Deputy Director-General (Technical), Mr. Theophilus Adonis Aryee Ago, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to enhancing aviation security capacity through collaboration, knowledge-sharing and continuous professional development.

He acknowledged AFCAC as the voice of Africa on civil aviation matters and described the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) as an equally vital partner with a proven track record of delivering world-class aviation training.

Mr. Ago noted that the partnership between AFCAC and CAAS serves as a bridge between countries, experiences and ways of thinking which foster meaningful learning, stronger cooperation and the exchange of expertise across the continent.

He commended both the instructors and participants for their commitment to the programme, noting that their presence demonstrated a clear understanding of what is at stake in safeguarding civil aviation. He urged participants to maximise the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and strengthen their crisis management capabilities.

Concluding his opening remarks, Mr. Ago encouraged everyone to approach the programme with “one mind, sharp thinking and sharp purpose,” stressing that a united and focused approach is essential to protecting the integrity of Africa’s aviation system.

In his welcome address, the Director of the Ghana Aviation Training Academy (GATA), Ing. Frank Kofi Apeagyei, encouraged the participants to actively engage throughout the programme, emphasising that the training provided a valuable platform for exchanging experiences, sharing best practices and building stronger networks among aviation professionals from across the continent.

Speaking on behalf of AFCAC, the Coordinator, Mr. Welcome Makomo, expressed the Commission’s appreciation to GCAA for its continued partnership and for hosting the important training programme.

He noted that the initiative reflected the shared commitment of AFCAC, GCAA and CAAS to strengthening aviation security resilience and enhancing crisis management capabilities among African States.

At the closing ceremony on Friday, 17 July 2026, the Acting Deputy Director-General (Technical), Mr. Theophilus Adonis Aryee Ago, once again represented the Director-General of GCAA and commended the Training Instructors from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) for their dedication, professionalism and commitment throughout the programme. He also acknowledged AFCAC for its vision and unwavering commitment to capacity-building across the African continent, noting that such collaborative initiatives continue to strengthen Africa’s aviation security framework.

Mr. Ago expressed confidence that the knowledge and practical skills acquired during the five-day training would enhance participants’ ability to effectively prepare for, respond to and recover from aviation-related crises in their respective States.

The Training Instructors from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Mr. Sherman Kor and Ms. Claudia Samuel thanked the participants for their enthusiasm, active engagement and willingness to share their experiences throughout the programme. They noted that the course had provided valuable opportunities for mutual learning, meaningful discussions and professional networking, and encouraged the participants to continue applying the lessons learnt while sharing best practices within their organisations to strengthen aviation security across the continent.

The Aviation Crisis Management Training equipped participants with practical knowledge and crisis management skills designed to improve preparedness, response and recovery during aviation-related crises, ultimately contributing to a safer, more secure and more resilient civil aviation sector across Africa.

The programme concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants in recognition of their successful completion of the Aviation Crisis Management Training programme.
