GCAA, ICAO Conclude Five-Day Workshop to Strengthen Aeronautical Information Management in Ghana

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) have concluded a five-day Results-Based Implementation Support (RBIS) Go-Team Assistance Workshop on Aeronautical Information Management (AIM), held from Monday, 19 October, to Friday, 23 October 2026.
The workshop, which was held at the Ghana Civil Aviation Training Academy (GATA), aimed to strengthen Ghana’s capacity in AIM implementation, focusing on the Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM), electronic Aeronautical Information Publication (eAIP), and Terrain and Obstacle Data (TOD).
In his closing remarks, the Director-General of the GCAA, Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, underscored the importance of effective coordination, skilled personnel, and robust quality management systems in strengthening aviation safety and security.

He noted that the workshop had provided an opportunity to assess existing arrangements, identify gaps, and establish a foundation for practical actions to improve aeronautical information management in Ghana.
Rev. Arthur particularly highlighted the collaboration among the GCAA, Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), and the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), stressing that the quality of aeronautical information depends on effective cooperation among stakeholders throughout the data chain.
He also encouraged the project teams to sustain their engagement and translate agreed actions into measurable progress.

The Representative of ICAO, Mr. Fanfé Bamba, who is the Regional Officer for Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) at the ICAO Western and Central African (WACAF) Office based in Dakar, Senegal, explained that the assistance formed part of ICAO’s support to Ghana in implementing an AIM database.
He said the workshop sought to strengthen the capacity of GCAA inspectorate personnel in regulatory and related activities, technical personnel in air navigation services, and personnel responsible for collecting terrain and obstacle data.
He noted that ICAO had provided generic procedures, specifications, and relevant provisions to guide implementation, while emphasising that the necessary resources would need to be provided to support the process.

The ICAO team expressed satisfaction with the workshop and reaffirmed its availability to support Ghana in implementing the resulting action plan.
Mr. Bamba also expressed appreciation to the GCAA for the warm welcome and cooperation extended to the team.
Representatives of the participants, in turn, thanked ICAO for the training and pledged to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to support the development of a safer and more secure air transport industry.
Declaring the workshop closed, Rev. Arthur expressed the GCAA’s appreciation to the ICAO Go-Team and all participants, reiterating the Authority’s commitment to advancing the agreed actions and strengthening aeronautical information management in Ghana.
