GHATCA Joins Global Community to Mark 65th<\/sup> Anniversary of Air Traffic Controllers Day<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Ghana has joined the global aviation community to mark the 65th<\/sup> anniversary of Air Traffic Controllers Day, with the Ghana Air Traffic Controllers Association (GHATCA),\u00a0 organising an Open Day to raise public awareness of the critical role air traffic controllers play in aviation safety and inspire the next generation of aviation professionals.<\/p>\n

Held on Tuesday, 20th<\/sup> October 2026 at the Control Centre and Tower of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority\u2019s Old headquarters, the event brought together students and teachers from Achimota Senior High School, Gracefield Schools and Frafraha Senior High School, alongside representatives of the Aircraft Accident & Incident Investigation & Prevention Bureau (AIB) Ghana and members of the general public.<\/p>\n

The participating schools comprised 30 students and six teachers from Achimota Senior High School, 48 students and four teachers from Gracefield Schools, and 40 students and two teachers from Frafraha Senior High School. AIB Ghana was represented by seven people, while 10 members of the general public also attended.<\/p>\n

In total, 118 students and 12 teachers participated in the programme, bringing the overall attendance to 147 people.<\/p>\n

The Open Day formed part of GHATCA\u2019s efforts, in collaboration with the GCAA, to commemorate the milestone anniversary while providing participants with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of air traffic management and the responsibilities of the professionals who help daily to ensure the safe, orderly and efficient movement of aircraft.<\/p>\n

Air traffic controllers occupy a critical position in the aviation safety chain. Their responsibilities include coordinating aircraft movements, maintaining safe separation between aircraft and communicating essential information to pilots to support safe flight operations.<\/p>\n

The profession demands a high level of concentration, technical competence, effective communication and sound judgement. Air traffic controllers must make timely and accurate decisions in a dynamic operational environment where safety remains paramount.<\/p>\n

Inspiring the next generation of aviation professionals<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beyond public education, the Open Day highlighted the importance of introducing young people to the technical and professional career opportunities available within the aviation industry.<\/p>\n

For the participating students, the visit provided exposure to an operational aviation environment and an opportunity to appreciate how specialised knowledge and skills are applied in air traffic management.<\/p>\n

The participation of students from three educational institutions underscored the value of early career guidance in helping young people identify pathways into aviation-related professions.<\/p>\n

As Ghana\u2019s aviation sector relies on skilled personnel to support safe and efficient operations, initiatives that connect students with industry professionals can help raise awareness of the qualifications, discipline and specialised training required for careers in the sector.<\/p>\n

The involvement of AIB Ghana representatives and members of the public broadened the engagement beyond the school community, reinforcing the importance of stakeholder participation and public understanding in promoting aviation safety.<\/p>\n

Celebrating 65 years of Air Traffic Controllers Day<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 65th<\/sup> anniversary of Air Traffic Controllers Day provides an opportunity to recognise the dedication, expertise and professionalism of air traffic controllers whose work is essential to the safe and efficient operation of the global aviation system.<\/p>\n

Although much of their work is not in public view, air traffic controllers remain central to coordinating aircraft movements, maintaining safe separation between aircraft and supporting the orderly flow of air traffic.<\/p>\n

The anniversary also draws attention to the specialised training, professional discipline and technical competence required to perform this demanding function, as well as the importance of developing future generations of qualified personnel.<\/p>\n

Through the Open Day, GHATCA and the GCAA brought the work of air traffic controllers closer to students, aviation stakeholders and the general public, while encouraging young people to consider careers in a field fundamental to civil aviation.<\/p>\n

The initiative reinforces the importance of sustained public engagement and aviation education in nurturing future talent and strengthening public understanding of the people and systems that support safe skies in Ghana.<\/p>\n
