GCAA Meets with Stakeholders to Improve Air Navigation Efficiency<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

ACCRA, Ghana \u2014 The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) hosted a stakeholder meeting on Thursday, 27th<\/sup> February 2025 to review air navigation procedures and discuss upgrades to Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) at Kotoka International Airport. The discussions focused on improving air safety, optimizing airspace use, and meeting international aviation standards.<\/p>\n

Enhancing Aviation Operations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Representatives from Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Africa World Airlines (AWA), Passion Air, Air Traffic Control (ATC), and other aviation industry players attended the meeting, exchanging insights on ways to enhance flight procedures and minimize inefficiencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us at GCAA, this meeting is important because it creates awareness and allows us to gather feedback on the review of PBN Instrument Flight Procedures at Kotoka International Airport,\u201d said Ing. Joyce Asante, Acting Deputy Director-General Technical (AG. DDGT), speaking on behalf of the Director-General.<\/p>\n

Upgrading Ghana\u2019s PBN System<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ghana first introduced PBN procedures in 2013 as part of a global push for modernized air navigation. The system is now being reviewed to accommodate increased post-pandemic air traffic, reduce flight delays, and enhance fuel efficiency. By using satellite-based navigation instead of traditional ground-based beacons, PBN allows aircraft to follow more precise routes, cutting fuel consumption and reducing emissions.<\/p>\n

The review aligns with GCAA Directives (GCAD) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations, reinforcing Ghana\u2019s commitment to air safety and operational efficiency within the Accra Flight Information Region (FIR).<\/p>\n

Addressing Industry Concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the meeting, stakeholders raised questions about helicopter operations. Mr. Blege, Manager of Flight Procedure Design, said plans are underway to introduce dedicated GPS-to-GPS flight tracks for helicopters, ensuring better integration within the PBN framework. \u201cWe need to prioritize helicopter operations as much as fixed-wing aircraft so that all airspace users benefit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
