Aviation Safety and Operations in the Spotlight in Ghana<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Accra, Ghana – 21 May 2024<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) Africa Safety and Operations Workshop, hosted by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), is starting this week for CANSO\u2019s Africa members. Regional experts and workgroup members have gathered in Ghana with the goal of collaborating across the region to enhance safety. The theme of this year\u2019s workshop is \u201cRecommitting Ourselves to Safety in Operations\u201d<\/p>\n

As Thabani Myeza, CANSO Africa Regional Director, said: \u201cThe topic of safety is a paramount theme in our industry and that is why we think it is crucial to meet regularly to identify new ways to move forward in this field.\u00a0Recently CANSO has made significant strides in delivering on regional programmes to accelerate the introduction of free route airspace and a peer review scheme for safety. Furthermore, CANSO is working closely with key regional stakeholders such as ICAO, AFRAA, and IATA to deliver on joint initiatives. These new approaches will require new ways of working and more commitment from members.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thabani added:\u00a0\u201cSome of our main objectives this week are learning from recent successes of collaboration and finding ways to enhance and replicate them. As well as focusing on their implementation and meaningful contribution towards regional programmes.\u201d<\/p>\n

On his part, Ing. Charles Kraikue, Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) indicated his excitement about the hosting of this important meeting in Accra, Ghana. Adding: “I believe aviation safety is the bedrock of the industry that directly and indirectly supports the employment and livelihood of not less than 65 million people globally. It is the reason that the GCAA has over the years championed the importance of safety among African States and gone further to include Safety and Security in its brand communication.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Ing Kraikue further stated: “It’s important for us, as experts, to strive to come up with a common goal during these four days that will propel us to strengthen our roles in ensuring that aviation safety remains paramount in the industry.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

About\u00a0Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is the regulatory agency of the Republic of Ghana for air transportation in the country.\u00a0It also provides air navigation services within the Accra Flight Information Region (FIR), which comprises the airspace over the Republic of Ghana and a large area over the Atlantic Ocean in the Gulf of Guinea.\u00a0The GCAA was established in 1930 as a unit with Public Works Department (PWD); in 1953 GCAA was granted Departmental Status. It became an Authority under PNDC Law 151 from 16th May, 1986. In the year 2004 the GCAA Act was enacted to replace PNDC Law 151.<\/p>\n

The Civil Aviation Act, Act 678<\/a>\u00a0of November 2004 provides for the establishment of a Civil Aviation Authority, which will focus on the core functions of Airspace management and Safety Regulations whilst allowing for a different organization to handle Airport development and operations.\u00a0Pursuant to the above, the GCAA was restructured into two bodies, that is, the new GHANA Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) on 1st January, 2007.<\/p>\n
